Joschka Fischer, former German Foreign Minister, former Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, and former chair of the German Green Party will speak on "The End of the West as We Have Known It?," at the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. in 019 Bendheim Hall. Fischer was a former LISD Senior Visiting Fellow while at the Woodrow Wilson School as Frederick H. Schultz Class of 1951 Professor of International Economic Policy. Joschka Fischer served as Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs 1998-2004 and as Vice Federal Chancellor during the administration of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.  He was one of the most popular politicians of his time in Europe, and joined Germany's Green party in 1982. Upon his appointment as Hessian Minister of the Environment and Energy in 1985, he was the first German Green politician to assume a post in the Federal Government. From 1987 to 1991, Fischer served in various capacities in the Hessian State Assembly; from 1991 to 1994 as Hessian Minister for the Environment, Energy and Federal Affairs; and from 1994 to 1998 he was Parliamentary Spokesman for the Green Party in the German Bundestag, the national parliament.

Joschka Fischer was in residence at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School during the 2006-2007 academic year. While at Princeton, he was LISD Senior Visiting Fellow and the Frederick H. Schultz Class of 1951 Professor of International Economic Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School, when he co-tought classes on Europe with Wolfgang Danspeckgruber, Robert Hutchings, and Andrew Moravcsik.

Amongst the many international recognitions, Joschka Fischer received honorary doctorates from the University of Haifa, from the Universities of Tel Aviv and of Michigan; he also received the Leo Baeck Medal awarded by James Wolfensohn and Henry Kissinger, 2009.

He is the author of many articles and books - most recently “Der Abstieg des Westens” (The Descent of the West) Kiepenheuer&Witsch, 2018; “Scheitert Europa?” (Is Europe Failing?) Kiepenheuer&Witsch, 2014; and “Die Rückkehr der Geschichte” (The Return of History) Knaur, 2005.

Today Joschka Fischer, based in Berlin, is currently a Senior Strategic Counsel at Albright Stonebridge Group, where he advises clients on issues relating to Germany and the European Union. He is also currently Managing Partner of Joschka Fischer and Company, a global strategy firm.
