Event Description

LISD sponsored a lunch seminar with Dr. Reinhard Eroes, "Tales from the Field: Saving Lives in Afghanistan," at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in 012 Bendheim Hall.

Eroes, a medical doctor and former officer in the German Federal Military, has been delivering humanitarian aid to Afghanistan for more than twenty years. He has risked his life providing medical treatment to the civilian population throughout the country. In 1986 he took non-paid vacation from the German military to assist as a medical doctor in Afghanistan, which was then occupied by Soviet forces. Between 1996 and 1998 he taught at the Fuehrungsacademie der Bundeswehr (General Staff University of the German Defense Forces). From 1999 to 2001, Eroes was Chief Surgeon for the Special Operations Division. In 2002, he retired to fully work in Afghanistan.

In recognition of his humanitarian efforts, Eroes was awarded the Europaeische Sozialpreis in 2003. He is the founder of German Aid for Afghan Children and is the author of Tea with the Devil, a book about his former neighbor, Osama bin Laden.
