Event Description

LISD sponsored a screening of Taliban Country, a film by journalist Carmela Baranowska on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall on the Princeton University campus. Baranowska is a winner of the Walkley Award and an IF Glenfiddich “Independent Spirit Awards” finalist. Following the movie screening, a discussion with Baranowska followed.

This documentary is a disturbing exposé of American actions in Afghanistan. Away from the glare of the media, in the most remote and dangerous parts of Afghanistan, US marines are on a mission to hunt down the Taliban. But in many places their security sweeps are proving counterproductive. More and more villagers are alleging they have been abused by marines. Baranowska spent three weeks embedded with the marines. She then returned in secret to document this story of prisoners abused and villagers humiliated. This report prompted a US inquiry.
