I knew that the mission in Afghanistan would be difficult, but not how difficult it would be. I knew that it would be costly, but not that Afghanistan would be short-changed all along the way. And I knew that it would depend on the belief of the Afghan people that change could and would come and bring a better life and peace to Afghanistan.
